We have panned out from the isolated planets of the series ‘Another World’ to take in a flavour of the many actual and possible worlds. The observable universe is probably a small proportion of the whole, but even so we can detect an estimated two trillion galaxies, each containing some 100 billion stars, so yielding 200 billion trillion stars in total. That’s the context for Carl Sagan’s famous observation that ‘The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself’ - for the elements essential for life, like carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, were synthesized within the cores of stars. And that, at least from an atheist point of view, is where we shall return, the mystery lying in the wonder of nature rather than the incomprehensibility of a god. - [Brief Life: Mostly Chance (after Pat Steir), 2025](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/brief-life-mostly-chance-after-pat-steir-2025/) - Brief Life: Mostly Chance (after Pat Steir), 2025, 96 x 66cm sumi ink, white ink on paper - [Where Have They Gone? 2025](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/where-have-they-gone-2025/) - The titular drawing of the sequence, ‘Where Have They Gone?’ 2025, expands the population dealt with through the suggestion that several have moved through a portal to the unknown. We can view the question as one that can be asked in due course of everyone. Are these, though, shoes discarded as unnecessary by those making the transition to another life, or shoes left in tribute to those who have departed? Text by Paul Carey-Kent - [The Send-Off, 2024](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/the-send-off-2024/) - The sequence begins with ‘The Send-Off’, 2024, an imposing 1.5m-wide work that refers to the death of Ballard’s mother, Mary, in 1964, when her daughter was just seven. Triggered by the death of her father in 2009 - 45 years later - Ballard sought some resolution to the obvious trauma involved over the years by seeking to rediscover her mother, to find out what her childhood was all about. As part of that process, she travelled widely to investigate the history of how civilisations have dealt with death. In her words ‘after descending into many burial chambers on the Orkney Islands and visiting Japan’s temples and shrines, and the mythological site of the river Sanzu (which the deceased need to cross to get to the afterlife), I came home inspired by humankind’s inventive ability to create death and grieving rituals as well as forms of the afterlife.’ This drawing, then, concludes that process. We see a funerary barge, a ship of time, sending Mary to the afterlife, enabling her daughter’s ‘adult self to say goodbye’. On the ship we see a blanket, recalled from Ballard’s childhood, to keep her mother warm, and a cup to supply drink on the journey. A moon-like disc provides the portal to another life. The ship appears Egyptian, pointing to another of Ballard’s destinations. Text by Paul Carey-Kent - [Mother, 2017](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/mother-2017/) - An earlier stage of that exploration led to the apparently abstract charcoal drawing ‘Mother’, 2017. Ballard recalls that the family were on holiday in the intense heat of Alicante when her seventh birthday fell, and she asked for ‘a proper big lacy black Spanish fan’. The next thing she recalls is her mother asking to borrow her fan. Mary had a fever from which she succumbed shortly after, and Ballard never saw her birthday present again. Now the suggestion of its patterning summons her mother’s lightness and femininity, while also providing a dark barrier through which she cannot be reached. Text by Paul Crey-Kent - [Family Mirror, 2017](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/family-mirror-2017/) - Where ‘Grief Tree’ is implicitly universal, the virtuoso graphite drawing ‘Family Mirror’, 2017, returns us to those close to Ballard herself. It depicts an occluded, tarnished mirror in which we can see no current reflection, but can muse on the history of who has been reflected in it: in this case, all the members of Ballard’s family, making it a poignant group version of Ballard’s abstract portraits of her parents. - [Buried Below, (2017)](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/buried-below-2017/) - ‘Buried Below’, 2016, can act as a complement to ‘We Are Stardust’. Here is the microcosmos of the earth, the initial literal destination of the buried body. Again, there are invented forms mixed in with the observation – inner feelings with the objective record of an emotionally charged spot. For this is the ground Ballard drew when she returned to her mother’s grave in Spain. Ballard reports, on entering Neolithic burial chambers in the Orkneys, that she felt how, in the weather-dependent agricultural communities that first settled the land, ‘the boundary between life and death may have been porous: ancestors were alive in the afterlife working on behalf of the living to ensure the sun shone and the rain came.’ ‘Buried Below’ generates a comparable sense of posthumous influence. Text by Paul Carey-Kent - [My Father as a Force of Nature in the Afterlife,2024-25)](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/my-father-as-a-force-of-nature-in-the-afterlife2024-25/) - That leads us naturally to Ballard’s equally abstract portrait of her father. ‘My Father as a Force of Nature’ is the smallest of the six making up ‘Where Have They Gone?’, but the biggest in energy. Ballard tried to represent him by depicting associated items, in particular a silver palm tree that stood in his study, but found that unsatisfactory. Then a ‘spontaneous whoosh’ of white gouache on the black ground suddenly caught what he was to her: ‘a force of nature strong enough to endure beyond this life’. And it is easy to appreciate that, as he was the widely acclaimed and posthumously influential writer J.G. Ballard (1930-2009), author of 16 novels along with much else. Text by Paul Carey-Kent - [Another World (2), 2025](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/another-world-2-2025/) - ‘Where Have They Gone?’ might be related to another recent series: those of ‘Another World’, 2025. The ink and gesso tondi concentrate matters down to what might be a portal, but reads more naturally as an alternate planet. We might think of the philosophical notion of possible worlds. That, in its most radical form, argues that the actual world is special only in that we happen to live there: many other possible worlds exist equally as the way things might have been. Might these be the possible worlds in which Ballard’s mother did not die in 1964? Bergson proposes that all matter possesses its own rhythm of duration, vibrating at frequencies above, below and between the rhythms of our own consciousness. By imagining how we are all connected through temporal rhythms, our view of and our relationship with the world is transformed. Moving as a series of connected lines, the prints visualise electromagnetic fields and vibrations, rhythms and waves, weaving and colliding in a state of flux. - [You Never Remember](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/you-never-remember/) - For further questions and price information, please do not hesitate to contact us on info@whiteconduitprojects.uk We look forward to hearing from you. - [The Lynching, 2024](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/the-lynching-2024/) - For further questions and price information, please do not hesitate to contact us on info@whiteconduitprojects.uk We look forward to hearing from you. - [William Mackrell, Cynara Scolymus, 2023](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/william-mackrell-cynara-scolymus-2023/) - For further questions and price information, please do not hesitate to contact us on info@whiteconduitprojects.uk We look forward to hearing from you. In Cynara Scolymus, William Mackrell adopts the artichoke as a metaphor for life and death. He gathers up and scatters the remains of the vegetable over sheets of paper, then buries buds under a blanket of metallic paint. Lifting the paper the buds fall to the floor revealing the residue of their placement. The resulting work appears to move in and out of focus, shifting from light to dark the work offers a sense of infinite depth suggesting a dreamscape or astrological backdrop. Our eyes move across the surface of the paper in search of clues but the work ultimately refuses any true resolution. - [Sarah Lederman, invitro, Oil on canvas](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/sarah-lederman-invitro-oil-on-canvas/) - For further questions and price information, please do not hesitate to contact us on info@whiteconduitprojects.uk We look forward to hearing from you. - [Mulele (M02), 2024](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/mulele-m02-2024/) - For further questions and price information, please do not hesitate to contact us on info@whiteconduitprojects.uk We look forward to hearing from you. - [Mimei Thompson](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/mimei-thompson/) - Mimei Thompson, Drowned Forest (Sulphur), 2024, oil on canvas, 61 x 76cm - [Tomoko Yoneda, Entwined barbwire and flowers, DMZ, 2015](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/tomoko-yoneda-entwined-barbwire-and-flowers-dmz-2015/) - For further questions and price information, please do not hesitate to contact us on info@whiteconduitprojects.uk We look forward to hearing from you. - [Tania Kovats, Last of my summer blooms, no.6 & 13, 2023](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/tania-kovats-last-of-my-summer-blooms-no-6-13-2023/) - Tania Kovats, Last of my summer blooms, no.13, 2023, Dahlia flower on paper framed size: 49 x 37cm paper size: 35.5 x 28cm, part of an ongoing series No.6 is also available to purchase. Not only animals, but fungi and trees are recognised for their independent systems of communication. Flowers…? Maybe less so. But not in Jiro - [Lana Locke, Aluminium tulip, 2012](https://whiteconduitprojects.uk/product/lana-locke-aluminium-tulip-2012/) - Lana Locke describes herself as a cross-disciplinary artist who explores the tensions of straddling domestic and art-making spaces as an artist mother, against wider political, social and ecological contexts. She explores the precariousness of human and non-human life, often by capturing perishing forms that signal our mortal interdependence on our surrounding communities and environments. Conflicting elements are forced together, and here a tulip is fused with a Coca-Cola tin. That places the flower in a consumer context – are we not consuming nature to potentially terminal extent? – as well as calling attention to how the natural world has to deal with the results of human pollution.
